Latvia accelerates off again
Curved sawing and sideboard optimisation
“Simply the best: Strong machines with good recovery, this was the main reason why we chose Linck-Technology”, reports Andris Krecers, the managing director of Sia Vika Wood, Talsu rajons / LV.
A Baltic business example. Sia Vika Wood is a rapidly grown and leading sawmill in Latvia and belongs to the business example on the Baltic area. It is located in the West of Latvia between Riga and Ventspils. The company uses Scandinavian machines as well as German technology. “The logs are like they are, thus we decided to adopt the curve sawing ”, explains Krecers. “Owing to the new Linck plant, which is operating since February, we were able to increase our recovery to 2%”, Krecers is satisfied.
Spirit of work. The processing could be raised to 440,000 m³ logs / year. “Many motivated collaborators are available in the young Baltic state”, enjoys Krecers. Currently 140 people are employed. Vika Wood ist the largest sawmill in Latvia. Besides 1,500 small sawmills, there are still 4 more of this size. The diameter sorted logs are crosscut prior to debarking. A new debarker supplied by Valon-Kone, Lohja/Fl, is available for this procedure.
Reducer technology for primary processing. The primary processing equipment has not been replaced for the moment. They work with a quad-bandsaw and chipper canter. The side boards are selected after the chipper canter and transported to the Söderhamn board edger.
Small end first. The chipper canter infeed system is equipped with variable pressure regulation for curve sawing. Even the outfeed system of the chipper canter VM 30 is specially designed for it. The cant alignment is carried out with split taper centering prior to entering the chipper canter. “As soon as the small end is centered in the outfeed system, the latter takes a floating position and saws the curve”, reports Linck installation manager Ernst Hauser. “As sawing takes place along the fibre, we produce better quality boards besides better recovery”, so Hauser. The side board optimisation immediately takes place after the chipper canter. The maximum side board height is determined by shifting the side board position in the four-sided cant. Each data of the four-sided cant is scanned by the Finnish Lisker measuring system.
First special model shifting station. The two-sided cant is transported to the “shifting station” by belt conveyor and roller conveyor. The machine line is U-shaped to allow chipping with small log end first and profiling and resawing with the large log end first. The four-sided cant is pressed on the chain conveyor (equipped with bottom and top chains) by the take-off chain to avoid its turning over. Then it is handed over to the infeed roller conveyor of the profiling units.
Prepositioning of profiler units. The centering system is prepositioned by the data of the side board optimisation. The board enters the first profiler unit in a centered way. The second profiler unit is prepositioned according to the curve. One or two side boards can be profiled curved.
Resawing with flexible circular saw. The circular saw (CSMK285-A3/B3) resaws according to the curve. The prepositioning of the precentering unit is carried out with the measuring data. The machine equipped with six tool axes has a cutting height of 285mm and produces 5 variable centre boards. The board separator is equipped with three chains. The chain in the middle is stationary, the following two are axially adjusted. Thus a variable number of centre boards can be supported by means of chain attachments from 65 up to 210 mm width. The side boards are separated. The main product is discharged crosswise and transported to the sorting and stacking plant.
Minimum space requirement. The plant had to fit in the existing sawmill building. The whole installation was carried out during normal production. The saw line is designed for processing logs from 3,3 up to 6,3m. Logs are sorted to diameter in 2 cm increments. The tools are sharpened in the sawmill. Jansen and Kanefusa sawblades are used. The chips are supplied to Scandinavia. Sawdust is transported to a pellet plant next door. The bark is used for the boiler plant. “We only loose the water during the drying process,” so Krecers. A further installation is planned to enhance the drying capacity.
Symbiosis Sweden-Finland-Latvia. „The Swedish-Finnish owner and the Latvian employees complement one another”, says the managing director gladly. Hebeda is to 60% and Thomesto is to 40% owner of Vika Wood. The major sales areas are Europe, North Africa and the Far East – especially 30% in Japan, 13% in Great Britain, 10% in Egypt, 8% in Marocco. The Latvian market supply increased from 8% to 15%, since individuals have now more financial aids for house building and the industrial sector rises slowly.
The main part of the spruce lumber is sent to the laminating plants in Europe and Japan. Great Britain and North Africa obtain pine wood. A great part is sold to the home market for the furniture industry.
44% of the 64,000 km² of Latvian soil is forest. Pine and spruce (59%) are the main species. The state owns the majority of the forest with 53%.
Joint Venture for round logs – 30% of price increase. The Latvian-Finnish Joint Venture is the major round log supplier of Vika Wood. 55% of pine and 45% of spruce are cut. Many Baltic sawmills have to lower or even to stop their production because of the difficult round log supply. Vika Wood is not concerned and it is proud of it .The round log prices increased last year by 30%.
